Yesterday we, the interns, visited two of Seattle's lesser known parks located in the middle of the city. The first happens to be located only a block away from our base at the Klondike Gold Rush NHP. The Waterfall Garden park is tucked away on the corner of Second and Main street and is completely free. Water cascades down the 22 foot waterfall creating a perfect backdrop for a peaceful lunch spot. The roaring of the water and the verdant plantings make it easy to forget you are in the midst of a bustling city. The park is only open from 9 to 5:30 but it is a beautiful place to walk through if you are in the area. Also for those of you who are looking for a bit more of an adventure, you can sit at the tables located closer to the waterfall, also known as the Splash Zone.
After exploring the Waterfall Garden we ventured down to the Waterfront Park on the Elliot Bay. The park offers prime views of the Seattle waterfront. The Ferris wheel toweing above the pier and the Seattle Aquarium next door make the Waterfront Park a popular destination for both tourists and locals. The park is scheduled for remodel soon to make the park even more engaging for visitors.
Next time you're downtown make sure to stop by these awesome parks!
Cost Breakdown: $1.25-$2.50 (bus fare)
Connecting Washington youth with special places in their backyard
We are 4 interns from the Student Conservation Association working with the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Seattle, WA. Our project is aimed at informing urban youth about the opportunities available for them in the National Parks and other cultural areas around Washington. We are especially focused on middle/high school students who are old enough to start being independent, but young enough that they may not have the means to coordinate large trips or outings without assistance.
Interns - Claire Parchem, Sophie Turnbull-Appell, Sarah Dunn, Natasha Way
Other Team Members - Kelseyanne Johnson, Leila Mirhaydari, Jimi Hightower
