Connecting Washington youth with special places in their backyard

We are 4 interns from the Student Conservation Association working with the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Seattle, WA. Our project is aimed at informing urban youth about the opportunities available for them in the National Parks and other cultural areas around Washington. We are especially focused on middle/high school students who are old enough to start being independent, but young enough that they may not have the means to coordinate large trips or outings without assistance.

Interns - Claire Parchem, Sophie Turnbull-Appell, Sarah Dunn, Natasha Way

Other Team Members - Kelseyanne Johnson, Leila Mirhaydari, Jimi Hightower

Summer in the Olympic Sculpture Park

Today we visited the Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture Park in Belltown, Seattle. The park is easily accessible from downtown Seattle so I would highly recommend strolling over there after spending some time in say, Pike Place Market. Although we took a bus (Line 5) over from Pioneer Square, we walked back along the piers and we were rewarded with a beautiful view of the Puget Sound.
The former industrial site, which opened on January 20, 2007, is perched at the northern end of the Seattle seawall, giving visitors an expansive view of the Puget Sound. On a clear day you may be able to get a glimpse of the snowy mountains in the distance. The park is free-admission and includes a variety of both permanent and visiting installations with sculptures including Eagle, Wake, and Typewriter Eraser, Scale X.
After spending some time researching the Seattle Art Museum, I was pleased to learn that the Olympic Sculpture Park is also hosting a series of family-friendly events this summer starting on July 10th and ending on August 28th. And guess what, they’re all free! On Thursday evenings from 6-9 pm, families are invited to enjoy great food, live music, and a range of art activities. They are invited to take an Art Hit Tour and take a break with arts and crafts with SAM Creates. For those who enjoy music, local bands will also be playing. Finally, food trucks will be far from scarce. Saturdays will also be active days from 10:30 am to 3 pm. Participants can rest and recharge with yoga and Zumba. Artists will also be teaching and giving demonstrations from 11 am-1 pm. Summer is a great time to not only get outside but appreciate art so I would highly recommend coming out to the Olympic Sculpture Park this summer!
